Gold Sovereigns and Half Sovereigns\u00a0contain gold to the value of\u00a0roughly \u00a3300\u00a0and \u00a3150 at today\u2019s prices. Depending\u00a0on the\u00a0design, the date it was minted, rarity and condition,\u00a0specific coins\u00a0may be of interest to historians, numismatists\u00a0or gold coin enthusiasts\u00a0and hold much greater value.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, during Queen Victoria\u2019s long reign,\u00a0several\u00a0versions\u00a0of her likeness were used\u00a0on\u00a0her coins. The iconic St George and The Dragon\u00a0design for Sovereigns was also replaced by a shield design at various times during Queen Victoria\u2019s reign.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gold Sovereigns aren\u2019t the only types of coins you might find as old heirlooms, or as part of pieces of jewellery.\u00a0The UK is a popular producer of such coins,\u00a0including\u00a0the Britannia, depicting the British emblem herself.
